Here are a few reminders to do all you can to protect yourself from compromises due to hot and humid weather:
Shower as needed- once you are too hot it will take a while to regain your nerve to muscle communication.
Drink lots of water any time of the year.
Drink very cold ice water, before and immediately after, doing any kind exercise or when you experience exertion (even walking or wheeling to and from the store) to lower your core temperature.
Swimming is terrific exercise and even just submersing your body in water and holding on to the edge of a pool or dock is good for the sensory feedback on your skin and cooling off that water provides. From gently fluttering your legs against the pressure of the water to more vigorous swimming laps, or using water weights, the combination of buoyancy and pushback is helpful to increase strength and endurance and- water workouts do not stress your joints.
For some people, wearing cooling vests can be a big help.
Make smoothies of healthy ingredients – with some fruit and nut or rice milk- and then semi-freeze it until it is the consistency of a slushie to cool you off. Snack on cool foods like melons and salads, and drink cool herbal ice teas using lots of mint. Cook food early in the day before it is too hot and then eat the foods cold or at room temperature for dinner. Rice, chicken and veggies; potatoes, turkey bacon and chopped vegetables; gluten free pasta primavera with fish; all of these can become a cool salad with the addition of a home made salad dressing.
stay cool!
