Who has experienced positive outcomes from the ELISA test? I've had the ALCAT but that's a food "sensitivity" test not a food "allergy" test. It was expensive and NOT covered by insurance. But I went that route because I was able to test without having to eat the foods in question.
But that's not the case with the ELISA test, correct? How far in advance of the test do you have to eat the offenders? I'm kind of scared to eat foods I've been off of for almost 18 months! But if I need to do it to get the results, I will.
Please help!
Thanks.
Susie

I don't notice the miniscule, subtle changes - only the big ones . But I haven't had reactions when I've eaten things I wasn't supposed to, according to the ALCAT. For example, I had curry at a Thai restaurant 2 weeks ago that had onions, garlic and peppers in the curry paste and a couple of pieces of white potato mixed in with the veg. And I drank a cup of decaf coffee yesterday. Felt totally fine (well, my relative "fine") afterwords with both - no worse. And some of the foods on the green list I react to: lima beans and beets. So it doesn't seem to be accurate or foolproof. Also, I can't eat all of those fruits - only ones that are less than 60 on the glycemic index and only one serving every other day.
I'm not completely disregarding it, but it's impossible to eat out on the ALCAT diet - which I've been on for 8 weeks. I've been on the MS Recovery Diet for almost 18 months and though my symptoms have slightly changed, I think the improvements in walking a little better and having more energy can be attributed to the fact that I've lost 20 lbs and my cholesterol has dropped 30 points. Bottom line is this: it's a very healthy way of eating and I plan to stick to it. If I feel better, awesome. If not, I'll still be healthy. I hope that my symptoms will improve. It took Roger MacDougall (who devised the Best Bet Diet) 4 years to feel better. I just don't think it's healthy to obsess about it. That doesn't mean I'm throwing it out the window, but I'm not completely sold on the ALCAT.

Hi there!
So what is on your green food list? Those other lists seemed so long that I'm wondering what you can eat..
Try to stick with it at least for a while to get your body cleaned and don't binge on problem foods right away.. After your body heals you can start moderately eating trigger foods without a problem, of course there might still be exceptions. For example: I can have coffee maybe once a week, if it's more than that then I immediately get a reaction! (mild numbness on face lasting 6hr minimum) Thats the only reaction left, I don't react to wheat if I eat it really rarely, once in two weeks. But at least I'm not afraid anymore to eat smth by accident coz my reactions have subsided and there has been no reminder of MS lately. Let's hope it stays that way...

Thanks 56sweetpea! I was tested and treated for CCSVI on June 18th. I had 3 occluded areas in my jugular veins (2 at the base of the the left and right at 50% and 1 in the upper left jugular behind my ear at 75%) - all ballooned, no stents. I have noticed immediate improvements: spasticity is gone, bladder is greatly improved and RLS is lessened - sat and watched a movie for 2 1/2 hours last night without a single twitch! Here's a link to my before and after videos on youtube (1 day before and 7 days post - with more updates to come): http://www.youtube.com/user/crucialsuz
I had the ALCAT test in May and it was totally overwhelming and I kind of feel like it's a scam (they assured me I'd start feeling better as soon as two weeks after starting. It's been almost 8 and so far, no noticeable improvements from changes in diet). The only good thing about it was that I got a discount and I didn't have to eat the foods I'd been eliminating prior to testing. They told me I had a mild reaction to candida and put me on a very strict cleanse and regimen, even though it was only a mild senstitivity (eliminated: BAKER'S YEAST, BEET SUGAR, BREWER'S YEAST, CANE SUGAR, FRUCTOSE, HONEY, MAPLE SUGAR, MUSHROOM, canned foods, alcohol, agave, vinegars, and anything pickled or fermented). I'd already eliminated most of the offenders in caps. Here are my other sensitivities (aside from gliadin - a sister to gluten and casein - which I can have in limited quantities):
Severe (none for 9 mos):
COCOA
EGG WHITE
FIG
PEANUT
PINE NUT
SAFFRON
SARDINE
SQUID
WALNUT
WATERCRESS
Moderate (none for 6 mos):

CAYENNE PEPPER
EGG YOLK
FLAXSEED
GINGER
GREEN PEPPER
LAMB
PARSNIP
PINTO BEAN
PUMPKIN
QUAIL
QUINOA
TROUT
VEAL
WHITE POTATO
Mild (none for 3 mos then only every 5th day):
ANCHOVY*
ASPARAGUS*
BASS*
BAY LEAF*
BLACK-EYED PEAS*
BROCCOLI*
BUCKWHEAT*
CHICK PEA*
CHILI PEPPER*
CLOVE*

The other odd part of these results is that soy is in my "green"/ok to eat list (I have to rotate foods in the green list every other day). I haven't had much of it, just a bite of tofu at a Thai restaurant. It also says I can have Lima beans but my legs got number and a cold sensation when I ate them. So... not sure if it's totally accurate.
It has made eating so much more difficult - I had gotten accustomed to the modifications necessary on the MS Recovery Diet. I am still kind of conflicted abut my decision to see an allergist (my appointment is Friday) and I'm nervous about having to eat the offending foods because I know what gluten and sugar do to me already. Of course, the devil on my shoulder tells me it's an excellent excuse to binge for a couple of days! But I don't know if the risk will be worth the reward.
I'm still going to go the appointment, just to see what the doc says. But I think for now, I'm going to stick to the green food list and if I go out to eat, then I'll adhere to the MS Recovery Diet minus any moderate or severe foods on the ALCAT list.
Thanks so much for your input!
Hi Susieu, I haven't
Hi Susieu,
I haven't commented on this website for a long time - the reason being, I wanted to wait until I could report more improvements than in my initial post. Anyway, I started the diet February 9/2009.(same day as you) There were so many improvements at first, I figured out that this must be the answer I had been looking for.
Even though a lot of things were so much better after the first year, my walking seemed to get worse. What the heck is going on here.....this is so confusing I thought!! Then, at the end of March, I decided on the ELISA test. Even though they say that you must eat the foods prior to testing, my Naturopath and I decided against it. It had been too long since I had eliminated the foods and I just couldn't do it. As well, I wasn't eating red meat, caffeine, sugar and alcohol - I had followed everything perfectly and couldn't take the chance. So, I had the ELISA test done and these were my results. My highly reactive food was Buckwheat. I was eating it every four days for breakfast. It was in my noodles and in my chia cereal as well. My moderately reactive foods were soy (which I hadn't touched for 13 months)almonds which I ate pretty much every day, cane sugar(never touched it for 13 months), brewer's and baker's yeast (totally eliminated for 13 months), oysters (I've never ever had an oyster) and whey. A lot of other things showed up in the first couple of columns, so I make sure I rotate them. I hope this helps.
Anyway, since I have eliminated the foods on the ELISA test, I have climbed to another level of wellness. I'm now noticing bladder improvements, less stiffness, I hardly ever wake up in the middle of the night with RLS and my afternoon naps are becoming a thing of the past. This is in addition to all of the things that I felt originally when I first started the diet.
Now, with everything that has come out about CCSVI, I totally see the connection. That is why diet and exercise work so well. In the meantime, I might add that I have been on the DMD Rebif since 2000, with no where near the results that I have had with the diet.
So, while waiting for the next step about CCSVI, I will continue on with diet and excercise.
Take care and good luck with the ELISA test.
