Several years ago, experiencing neurological symptoms of unknown origin, I scheduled an appointment with a neurologist. Upon presenting general complaints, I was told by the neurologist that I need to relax; nothing wrong with me. Feeling like I had manufactured some strange psychosomatic disorder, away I went, emotionally drained.
Symptoms persisted; tingling of extremeties, tightness in calves and forearms, tremors. I decided a second opinion was in order and scheduled an appointment with a different neurologist at a major teaching hospital. After several diagostic procedures, it was suggested that I may have MS. Symptoms were consistent with MS. Clinical findings (white matter abnormalities) suggested MS as well. At this point, it was suggested I seek another opinion and opted for a full diagnostic workup at the Mayo Clinic. Again, all evidence pointed to MS; although no official diagnosis was made. All other conditions were ruled out.
I followed the diet religiously for over two years, with absolutely no fudging whatsoever.
Regular follow-up visits with the neurologist were eventually discontinued. Today, I have no complaints at all and, to be quite honest, have not thought of my former health concerns for many, many months.

I have been on the recovery
I have been on the recovery diet for 5 months now and have not noticed much improvement, can you please tell me how long you were on the diet before you noticed improvement in your symptoms...

Looking at this from 13
Looking at this from 13 years.
People ask what can you eat now, how do you stay slim, how do I keep on weight and when will I walk again.
I believe from talking to lots of people with MS (I used to go to support groups sponsored by MS society) and periodically attend though I usually am quite unpopular and get lots of glares, this is not one disease. Each person manifests differently and the diet is a key we can control, but there are other factors such as stress, toxins perhaps in the environment at home or work, not living your authentic life to name but a few.
I used the diet as a way to clean up my system and give it a chance to heal. Since I had no model such as this book to follow I created my own approach based on what heals other things like cancer. At the time in 1995 Omega-3 fats were just coming to awareness and in particular for heart disease so I got the idea that I needed to remove the bad stuff and add some good stuff. I used flax seed oil in pretty significant doses then and ate very simply for a couple of months.
Lots of people with MS diagnosis don't sleep well or exercise. These are significant co-factors. I went from 2 espresso's a day to none.
My belief that I was going to get well was so strong that to me it was not a sacrifice. I do have red wine sometimes and dark chocolate, no dairy because those are my favorite treats and I can be moderate, but I'd stop immediately if I had any symptoms. In NC we have extreme heat and humidity and I'm out in it gardening or walking briskly with our 8 year old who is on a scooter. I feel and act like a healthy person. I'm 49 so I see others with no chronic illness complaining about this or that or eating the donuts and having the cola drink.
I used to just say to myself option A) Live the life you want to have fully or B) Do what you know isn't working and get the opposite.
It was an easy choice for me. I don't measure or follow recipes now because it is internalized and you, too will get there one meal at a time.

Thanks, Sarah and Judi, for encouraging comments. I need it today.
REcovery
Hi Nicole, please don`t be discouraged, i totally sympathise with you, as i myself want nothing more than to be able to walk `normally` again, but the book does say patience is a virtue. I started the diet 4 days ago and like yourself am already experiencing small, but definate improvements. For example the last 2 mornings i have been able to get out of bed without having to stand rigid until the muscle spasms ware off!! Have faith in yourself, the body is a powerful tool and it can repair itself. I`ve given myself 3 years to heal, as that`s how long my mobility has taken to deteriorate, but i have complete trust that it will work. keep strong. With love and encouragement Sarah x

I know there are some people in your book who took years to recover, but I'm discouraged that, unlike Judi and Ann, I'm not yet seeing improvement in my walking. I started the diet April 5, but as the book suggested, didn't eliminate dairy and eggs till one month later. However, one week into the diet (free of gluten, yeast and legumes), mobility in my affected hand and arm improved a lot, though is still not normal. The initial improvement in my hand remains stable, though I don't think it has gotten better since that first week. The ribs on my left side, which had had a muffled feeling of sensation, are now normal. I have fallen on my right side, so those ribs still feel muffled. I think my energy level is better. And, though it may be too early to say for sure, the head and neck pain that sometimes was excruciating, seems less frequent and severe. Judi has said that happened to her, too. But I've gone through headache-free periods before, so I'm cautious on this one. As I look back at what I've typed, I guess I'm silly to be so impatient after only a couple of months, but I just want to walk better! All the things I've listed as improvements seem hard to regard as proof of the diet's efficacy because they're subtle. Improvement in walking would be dramatic and give me a life again. Judi and Ann, we who walk badly (or not at all) need encouragement!
Keeping Weight On?
Byron:
Do you have any suggestions for weight gain within the MS Recovery Diet framework? I was recently diagnosed (02/2008) and have always been slim. I am now past slim and need to increase my caloric intake while remaining on the diet. I am a man who is 6'2" and 145 pounds currently (my normal weight is closer to 160). Thanks for your story.

your recovery
Bryon, I have not met you but I hope to some day. Thanks for being willing to revisit what no longer is a distressing theme in your life- MS symptoms. Your 2 year committment with no fudging is inspiring and I am delighted that you are so well. Is it true that you had no real signs of recovery for about a year? All the more impressive that you stuck to it. I am only 1 year and 3 months into the diet and because I made some immediate gains, it was made very clear for me that I would continue. Again, thank you for reaffiriming what the diet has done for you and will do for others as the message continues to spread. Judi Bachrach
